Hermès just opened its first Shang Xia store in Shanghai last week. Shang Xia (‘topsy-turvy’ in Mandarin) is built specifically for the Chinese market.
Conducted by Jian Qiong Er, the Artistic Director of the brand, the products which include homeware, furniture, and limited edition ‘cultural object’ are made in China by Chinese craftsmen.
Hermes hopes Shang Xia will boost its already strong position in Asia (Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan) which are currently Hermès’ principal market, but according to Patrick Thomas (CEO of Hermes): “If Shang Xia becomes a competitor to Hermès, that would be a success”.
Hermès has plans to open up a Shang Xia store in Paris in 2011, and another in Beijing in a few years …
