shang xiaHermès just opened its first Shang Xia store in Shanghai last week. Shang Xia (‘topsy-turvy’ in Mandarin) is built specifically for the Chinese market.

Conducted by Jian Qiong Er, the Artistic Director of the brand, the products which include homeware, furniture, and limited edition ‘cultural object’ are made in China by Chinese craftsmen.

Hermes hopes Shang Xia will boost its already strong position in Asia (Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan) which are currently Hermès’ principal market, but according to Patrick Thomas (CEO of Hermes): “If Shang Xia becomes a competitor to Hermès, that would be a success”.

Hermès has plans to open up a Shang Xia store in Paris in 2011, and another in Beijing in a few years …

Jaeger-LeCoultre-Master-Memovox-International-for-Colette-T.jpgJaeger-LeCoultre presents an exclusive edition of the Master Memovox International for the “Cabinet de curiosités de Thomas Erber” event, hosted by the concept store Colette in Paris.

The Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Memovox International “Colette” is easily recognizable with its steel case – black PVD coated. The list of cities on the dial also gets special attention as “Paris” gets replaced by a blue “Colette” logo.

The “Cabinet de curiosités de Thomas Erber” is held from november 29th through to december 31st 2010 and brings together 25 artists (brands, creators, designers, musicians…) who will each be presenting a piece (watch, garment, photograph…) created exclusively for this event. Thomas Erber hand picked each participant for the quality of their craftsmanship and their interpretation of “luxury”.

Only three Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Memovox International “Colette” will be produced.

Coca-Cola-dressed-by-Gianfranco-Ferre-for-Charity.jpgHaving a bunch of famous fashion designers “re-imagine” the Diet Coke bottle may seem a tad frivolous, however the reason is anything but: cystic fibrosis – an inherited genetic disorder that, amongst other things, renders almost anyone who has it, male or female, infertile. And the Coca-Cola “Tribute to Fashion” event hosted in cooperation with the Fashion, Events and Design Commission of the City of Milan is helping raise awareness and funds for the 2010 “Women Reseachers for Cystic Fibrosis” Project.

For the second edition of this special initiative, Tommaso Aquilano and Roberto Rimondi, Creative Directors of Gianfranco Ferré, drew inspiration from four of the house’s signatures: a rich croc texture, an Obi belt, a white silk shirt, and the brand’s identifying symbol: the Signature Pin – all of which celebrate the famous Contour bottle.

The-Martell-Amber-Lamp-by-Jean-Nouvel-Design-5-copia-1An encounter between prestigious Martell cognac and Jean Nouvel, one of the world’s most famous modern architects, has given rise to The Martell Amber Lamp: a polysemic work created as a tribute to the virtuosity of Martell cognac.

This luminous sculpture consists of an imposing glass bulb with a tall metal staff; its striking architecture glows with life and captivates with sleek, poetic charm. Jean Nouvel has expressed his full talent in creating not so much a lamp, but a light (an amber light) that emits endless luminous pulses in shimmering golden and copper waves. The waves modulate the space by creating a warm, calm atmosphere for reflection, for the pleasure of tasting, a refined art of living or the enjoyment of a shared experience.

The Martell Amber Lamp represents the amber purity of a glass of Martell and its crescendo of rising aromas, warm, full and generous, a precious silken drop of cognac emerging from the still!

The Martell Amber Lamp also represents Martell‘s closeness to the world of art. In the past, Martell‘s bottles and glasses have been designed as authentic works of art by such celebrated designers as glass sculptor Serge Mansau, architect Paul Andreu and interior designer Andrée Putman. Martell is also involved in the international cultural scene, supporting the restoration of the Grand Couvert Antechamber in the Château de Versailles.

50 Martell Amber Lamps will be produced and exposed in prestigious outlets across the globe, art galleries, museums, etc, and at Martell’s Château de Chanteloup in Cognac.

Fromboluti.jpgIf luxury was self-sustaining, hidden from the world?

Matthew Fromboluti from the Washington University in St. Louis has conceptualized a self-sustaining building that will can be constructed in a 900-foot deep and 300-acre wide crater left by the former Lavender Pit Mine. The proposed structure, christened “Above Below”, will include living and working areas.

The building is entirely self-sustaining: power source, water recycling system, solar chimney to control the artificial climate.

Enclosed with a dome roof, the building is completely contained underground, with only strategically-placed skylights for climate control providing access to the world above ground.

However, the society living inside is far from isolated – a light-rail system connects the building with nearby Bisbee.

BSide-Bed-by-Federico-Bergese.jpgDo you need design furniture for your empty Penthouse?

The inside part, conceals instead the technological heart of the bed; here we find a polymeric gel covered by a black leather, in the middle embellished by a central band of RGB led that crosses in length the inside part of the bed so also developing the function of reading lamp.
